Can Synthesizers 'Listen' to Mushrooms?

A mini-doc recorded in Djurgarden, Stockholm

Hi friends and nature lovers,

I’m fresh back from a jaunt across Europe and still finding my feet here at home in Vancouver, Canada. This week I’m sharing a short performance and mini-doc that is somewhat topical as it was recorded on a recent trip to Stockholm.

To set the stage, my friend Susanne Gløersen runs the ‘Future is Fungi’ awards and asked if I could record a short intro to the awards show. I agreed (obviously!) and we decided to meet up the morning after my event and have some fun with mushrooms in Djurgarden Park near the city center. What I had not been anticipating was massive feast with new friends, a full night of raving, and a large Romanian breakfast directly preceding this video shoot - with zero sleep and barely a few minutes to shower and change. I managed to dig into my inner rock star and we spent a very enjoyable spring morning plugging into a veritable buffet of ‘svamp’ (mushrooms in Swedish) and talking about the basics of how this all works. In retrospect, it was definitely the best way to come down from the adventures of the previous night.

This short film was shot and edited by Philip Bergman.

The culture around mushrooms in Sweden is unlike anything I’ve experienced in North America. Most people I’ve met have a basic knowledge of foraging and can identify at least a few species of wild mushrooms. On this most recent trip our friend Robin from Stockholm Fungi spent a whole afternoon touring us around his property and outdoor laboratory where he’s cultivating Shiitakes, Lion’s Mane, Turkey Tail, Oysters and more!

Next week I’ll be sharing a little bit more from Europe as well as hosting an office hours where I’ll be introducing you to my modular synthesizer and how it works. Stay tuned for that.

And if you’re in Vancouver, please join us this Sunday June 1st for the Vancouver Mycological Society’s Spring Mushroom Celebration. I’ll be jamming with both fungal and human friends at 3:45pm in the Floral Hall at Van Dusen Gardens. See you soon 🍄
